Ducks in the Courtyard
May 2008

Mama and Babies - Duck Family

First Presbyterian Church gained new users of our facilities in early May 2008.  Our courtyard area is completely surrounded by the building with only one entrance open to nature - from the sky.

In 2008, as in prior years, Mrs. Duck decided that the church courtyard was the perfect place to have a family.  It is hard to see the Duck family in the above picture.

Ducklings

Mrs. Duck feels the courtyard at First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton is a very welcoming place, as well as a safe place to leave her babies as needed. After all, no dogs or cats have been invited to worship services in the courtyard since October 2007.

Sadly, this year six were wiped out by a very heavy rain we had one Sunday night.  Church staff members found them dead the following morning.

Ducklings

Once mama duck decides her ducklings are ready to leave the nest, she will start flying up to the roof and quacking.

Miguel Barrera, our janitor, then knows it is time to scoop the ducklings up in a box and take them out.

He usually releases them over in the grass on the Jefferson Street side of the church.  They do lots of quacking, and then the mom flies down and off they go.  It is really fun to see.

Our thanks to Mary Kinsey for the photos and information!
